Something that is repeated often enough eventually assumes the condition of a fact, irrespective of its actual truth or falsity. And ideas have behavioural consequences. If you tell people often enough that their real motivation is not what they think it is but is purely self-interest (perhaps masquerading as something else), then eventually that is what people believe – and they act accordingly. Other ways of evaluating their choices, desires and actions are disregarded, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy. The extension of purely economic values into all areas of human life jeopardises the non-economic values that form part of what it is to be human.
